Vaccinul reprezinta un produs biologic ce contine substante numite antigene. Antigenul induce raspunsul imun al organismului pentru anumite boli infectioase sau virale. Procesul injectarii vaccinului se numeste vaccinare.

Chiar daca pisica nu iese din casa, riscul de a se imbolnavi este in continuare mare. Virusii pot fi adusi in locuinta chiar de tine, pe pantofi sau pe haine. In plus, conform legilor in vigoare, fiecare pisica care locuieste la curte si are contact cu alte animale trebuie vaccinata impotriva rabiei, o boala contagioasa si foarte periculoasa.
Protectia vaccinurilor primite de puii de pisica nu asigura o imunitate stabila toata viata. Vaccinarea se repeta o data pe an, pentru ca pisica adulta trebuie sa fie protejata in continuare impotriva bolilor infectioase. Repetarea anuala a vaccinarii este importanta deoarece intareste sistemul imunitar al animalului.
Primele vaccinuri se fac la varsta de 8 sau 9 saptamani, in functie de momentul in care sunt intarcati puii, rapelul fiind la 2-3 saptamani. Vaccinurile trebuie sa protejeze pisica de bolile mai sus enumerate. Desigur, in functie de tipul de vaccin, planul de vaccinare poate fi modificat.
